Science communicator | Journalist | Videographer

G'day! I'm James. I'm a science communicator, journalist, and videographer with 11 years' experience in broadcast news, government and science communication.

I have advanced videography and editing skills; professional web, storytelling, and production experience; and a proven track-record developing and executing end-to-end communication plans.

I have a Graduate Certificate in astronomy and completed the International Space University's Space Studies Program in 2024, hosted in Houston, TX. I leverage my detailed knowledge of astronomy and space industry to deliver expert science communication for Australia's national science agency, CSIRO.

Video

Bespoke video content with a journalist's touch

Over five years at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation I trained a sharp eye for TV news, producing and presenting hundreds of packages on politics, science, crime, and more. I understand what's needed to fill two or 20 minutes of airtime, capture (and keep) the audience's attention, and convey complex topics in a digestible way.

In the years since, I've developed content for charities, features on space technology, and started my own astronomy education channel. I'm truly a jack of all trades - I write, produce, film, edit, and present my own work, ensuring minimal briefing and nothing lost in translation. I can produce packaged content, present and manage livestreams, and shoot TikToks and Instagram Reels with rapid turnaround.

Storytelling

Helping people make their story resonate

How do you take a complex science project, medical diagnosis, or government initiative and make people care? I've spent years taking sometimes dry topics - political motions, research papers - and making them shine. I work closely with talent to understand what makes them passionate and bring that to centre stage. At the end of the day, stories are about people - and that's where I begin.

Communications Planning

End-to-end communications services

When you're investing in a major event, initiative, or project, you need to ensure your signal is not lost in the noise. I've spent years developing and executing on detailed communications plans for conferences, announcements, fundraising events, and more. Collectively my work has garnered billions of impressions, raised millions of dollars, and generated new conversations, business leads, and contracts.

My communication plans cover a wide array of techniques and considerations: audience, key messages, social and video content, media releases and events, live streams and more. I embed analytics and reporting into every stage of my work, ensuring the desired result is achieved and identifying future opportunities to lock down the benefits.
