Perseverance fails to collect Martian rock

NASA's Perseverance rover has been kicking science goals for months now, nailing its landing at Jezero Crater and conducting a dozen flights with its Ingenuity helicopter—the first ever powered flights on another planet.

But its flagship instrument, a sampling system designed to eventually return Martian samples back to Earth, came up empty on its first attempt.
